Well Known Sheep Breeds for Meat, Wool and Dual Purpose Flocks
Deccani Sheep
A black or brown coarse-wool breed of the Deccan plateau, kept mainly for mutton and manure. Deccani flocks walk long distances and cope well with dry grazing.
Nellore Sheep
A tall, hair-type Andhra breed with almost no wool, raised purely for meat. Nellore rams grow fast and command strong prices in south Indian markets.
Mandya Sheep
A compact Karnataka breed famous for tender, well flavoured mutton and a distinctive reversed ear. Growth is moderate but carcass quality is excellent.
Bannur Sheep
A prized Mandya-type meat sheep from southern Karnataka whose mutton fetches a premium. Flocks are usually small and closely managed.
Marwari Sheep

Malpura Sheep
A fast growing Rajasthani meat breed that lambs easily and needs little supplementary feeding. It is widely used in flock improvement programmes.
Sonadi Sheep
A light framed southern Rajasthan breed with a white body and tan head, kept for meat and milk. Ewes are good mothers under extensive grazing.
Patanwadi Sheep
A Gujarat triple purpose breed giving wool, milk and mutton. It is one of the few Indian sheep breeds regularly milked by pastoral communities.
Muzaffarnagari Sheep
A large western Uttar Pradesh breed with excellent body weight gain, ideal for commercial mutton units. Ewes frequently produce twins on good feeding.
Jaisalmeri Sheep
A tall desert breed with a black face and long legs, bred for endurance on migratory routes. It yields moderate carpet wool alongside meat.
Pugal Sheep
A Bikaner desert breed with fine carpet wool and a black face marked with brown. Pugal sheep are valued for grazing efficiency on thorny scrub.
Gaddi Sheep
A Himalayan breed kept by migratory shepherds in Himachal and Jammu, producing fine white wool. It handles cold, steep terrain with ease.
Rampur Bushair Sheep
A hill breed of Himachal Pradesh giving good quality wool and useful mutton. Flocks migrate seasonally between valley and alpine pasture.
Bhakarwal Sheep
A large Jammu and Kashmir breed with a heavy fleece, herded by the Bakarwal community. It is well adapted to long altitude migrations.
Changthangi Sheep
